Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the rapid growth in technology and globalization, the level of competition in the global marketplace has become more intense. In order to survive in today’s highly competitive and demand-driven market, organizations need to take appropriate and economic decisions on time. To win the battle, organizations need to allocate and utilize resources appropriately for achieving optimal performance. The end objective is to achieve the maximum possible outcome of the decision taken at minimum possible efforts while operating under a number of imposed constraints. In other words, organizations need to embrace continuous developments in practices of Operations Research (OR) which attempts to improve a bad decision which could have been worst otherwise by finding the maximum or minimum possible value of the objective function (defining the problem) subject to a number of constraints.
Need for Operations Research (OR) tools and techniques are manifested in its ability to balance conflicting objectives (goals or interests) where there are many alternative courses of action available to the decision-makers while resources, time and fund are limited. Therefore, beyond the domain of theoretical knowledge and model building activities, OR is having all pervasive applications in decision making about the problems in society and business. OR tools and techniques find applications in all facets of business operations like asset allocation, portfolio selection, fraud prevention, direct marketing campaigns, predicting customer response, supply chain planning, distribution, routing, scheduling, traffic flow optimization, staff allocation, merchandise optimization, product mix and blending, industrial waste reduction, energy conservation, optimization of ore-handling process, simulation of protein folding, and city planning to mention a few, irrespective the nature of organizations. Over the years, applications of OR has been extended to solve the problems of communication of information and socio-economic fields. In this context, the academic community needs to take the lead in the design, development and demonstration of sustainable operational research models, endowed and supported by organizations.
Under this backdrop, Calcutta Business School (A Unit of Shikshayatan Foundation, Kolkata, West Bengal, India) in collaboration with Operational Research Society of India (Kolkata Chapter), member of IFORS, has organized the First International Conference on Frontiers of Operations Research and Business Studies (FORBS 2018) during October 11-13, 2018 in Kolkata. This special issue of the journal Decision Making: Applications in Management and Engineering (DMAME) covers 12 (Twelve) selected papers which were presented during FORBS 2018.
