A Market-Oriented Approach to Procurement Market and Supplier Selection in Agricultural Supply Chains

Within agricultural supply chains, decisions concerning the choice of procurement markets and suppliers constitute an important strategic issue. The performance and competitiveness of an agricultural business are strongly influenced by its ability to identify suppliers capable of adapting efficiently to changing market requirements and demand conditions. Because supplier evaluation involves several, often competing considerations, the selection process can be formulated as a multi-criteria decision-making problem in which alternative suppliers must be assessed systematically against a defined set of criteria. In view of this complexity, the present study develops an integrated decision-support model for selecting procurement markets and suppliers in agricultural supply chains. The proposed framework combines the Best Worst Method (BWM), which is employed to establish the relative significance of the evaluation criteria, with the multi-objective optimisation based on simple ratio analysis (MOOSRA) method, which is used to determine the ranking of competing suppliers. The applicability of the framework is demonstrated through a case study involving supplier evaluation within an agricultural supply chain. Four alternative suppliers were assessed using six criteria, namely product price, delivery lead time, product quality, delivery reliability, sustainability compliance, and financial stability. Based on the resulting evaluation and ranking, Supplier 2 was identified as the most appropriate alternative for the agricultural company examined in the case study.
